Apex is the name of a town located in Wake County, North Carolina. It is primarily a suburb belonging to Raleigh, and the estimated town population recorded by the US Census Bureau as of July 2014 is nearly 44,000. An interesting fact about Apex is that it was ranked #1 by TIME Magazine in August 2015 on the list of top places to live in the US.
The suburb of Apex became incorporated in the year 1873. It was named because of having its location as the highest point on an area of the Chatham Railroad. This ultimately extends between Jacksonville, FL and Richmond, VA. The town grew gradually through its succeeding decades, even though it underwent several disasters such as devastating fires, such as the conflagration in June 1911 that destroyed many of the business district located downtown.
The town center had to be rebuilt afterwards and it still stands to this date, being among the most intact railroad districts in North Carolina now. At the heart of this area is the Apex Union Depot which was a passenger station originally for the Seaboard air Line Railroad. It was also home of the Apex Community Library later on, which was locally supported. Currently, the depot houses the town’s Chamber of Commerce.
As per the data of the United States Census Bureau, Apex has a total area of 40 km2 out of which 0.39 km2 of it is water, which roughly amounts about 0.57%, and 39 km2 of it is land. Neighboring towns of Apex include Holly Springs to the south as well as Cary to the north and northeast.
Apex enjoys a climate with warm humid temperature. The town has no dry season whereas the summers are hot. The area inside 40km of this district is covered by rivers and lakes (5%), croplands (16%), forests (74%), and built up areas (6%). The suburb gets about 49 inches of rain every year, with 37 inches being the average across the US. On the other hand, it also gets snowfall of about 5 inches on a yearly basis while the average city in the US gets roughly 25 inches a year.
